Smashed Comfort Zones

Maya washed Hannah this evening, which presented me with this great photo opportunity of them afterwards.

I am suffering from a bit of brain mush after a long day of culture meetings. We covered over 26 pages of notes and a PowerPoint presentation. Our conversation centered on the art of understanding and fitting into a foreign cultural framework.

Knowledge is never enough, though. This is not academic, at least, not in its full depth. Learning to behave in a culturally aware manner takes a great deal of time, patience, study, humility, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones, and into somebody else’s.

My friend summed it up like this, “There are two kinds of foreigners who come here: those who come here to live, and those who are only visiting, no matter how long they stay. The national can tell the difference in an instant.”

Anyway, that was our day. Tomorrow morning, we have an important meeting. Appreciate your prs for us in that. I posted the details about that before (last paragraph of that post).
